UNNC Seeking Community Tree Volunteers!
As we come in to the summer months, we are in high danger of losing a lot of our new street trees if they are not watered... and I'm asking for VOLUNTEERS! I'd love to have at least one person from each of the areas in the map below volunteer to be the tree "watch dog" for that area.
Volunteering will entail a commitment through the dry season to do a once a week check on your trees, talking to the owners of the uncared for trees about watering and maintenance, or doing the watering and maintenance yourself if the owner will not do it. Each tree needs 5-10 gallons of water a week to survive the summer. They also need weeding, and in some cases stake adjustments or replacing broken stakes.
KYCC (Koreatown Youth and Community Center) will do a workshop to train us all on maintenance techniques and tree care guidelines. I will provide you with 5-gallon buckets to use for watering, and we will have a reserve of stakes and ties for any trees that need restaking.
United Neighborhoods Neighborhood Council (UNNC) has purchased two watering tanks that will fit in the flat bed of a truck or in the back of an SUV for volunteers to use for watering trees. The tanks hold up to 100 gallons per tank - each tree will take about 5 gallons to fill up their berms. So if you're feeling really industrious and you have a truck, you can just load up the tank and go watering!
The main goal is to make sure all of our trees survive the summer months with enough water to ensure they will grow correctly. Regular watering is very important for the first two years of a tree's life, so your efforts will be well-rewarded with beautiful, healthy trees. It is also a great way to outreach and get to know your immediate neighbors.
We also hope that towards the end of the summer we can get even more owners interested in adopting trees. KYCC will begin planting again in the fall, so let your neighbors know they might be eligible to adopt a street tree if they have not already.
You may sign up for more than one region, but I don't want to overwhelm anyone, it's hot out there, and I really need people who can commit to checking on their area's trees once a week and watering the ones that need it.
The regions are mapped out below. Please email or call me if you are interested in volunteering, and pass this along to anyone you know who might be.
Sincerely,
Andrea Dunlop
