SOUTH LOS ANGELES S.A.F.E. COLLECTION CENTER NOW RE-OPENED

LOS ANGELES (October 29, 2009) - The City of Los Angeles' Bureau of Sanitation, Department of Public Works, re-opened its newly constructed South Los Angeles S.A.F.E. (Solvents, Automotives, Flammables and Electronics) Collection Center today, Bureau Director Enrique C. Zaldivar. “The Center provides both Los Angeles City and County residents with a permanent facility to safely and legally recycle and/or dispose of potentially hazardous waste,” said Zaldivar. These items which can be hazardous to the workers, animals and the environment, should not be disposed of in the regular trash and, instead, should be delivered to a S.A.F.E. Collection Center for proper recycling or disposal.

Potentially hazardous includes:

  • RSM or Residential Special Material - This includes paint products (paint, paint thinner, turpentine, solvents, etc); automotive products (used motor oil, oil filters, brake fluid, antifreeze, car batteries, etc); computer monitors and televisions; household and garden chemicals (including pool cleaners and fertilizers); SHARPS (syringes and needles), and expired or unused medication (excluding controlled substances).
  • U-Waste or Universal Waste - This includes fluorescent tubes, bulbs (CFL’s), mercury containing lamps, thermostats and common household batteries; and
  • E-Waste or Electronic Waste - This includes televisions, computer and computer monitors, cell phones, printers, fax machines, radios, VCR’s and microwave ovens. T

The S.A.F.E. Center, located at 2649 E. Washington Boulevard in Los Angeles, is the sixth such collection center operated by the City of Los Angeles. It is open to provide service to the public on Saturday and Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., excluding holidays.
