After many years of the community working together, the Leslie Shaw park is ready for its Grand Opening on Saturday, February 27, 10 am at 2223 W. Jefferson Blvd. The celebration is sponsored by Council President Herb Wesson Jr, the Department of Recreation and Parks and the UNNC.
The park is named after the first African American postmaster general appointed to a large city, by President Kennedy. As the only green space in the community of Jefferson Park we are excited about its renovation. UNNC Board Member Sandra Pruitt spearheaded this project with its first community meeting in November 2012. Subsequent community meetings honed the design and incorporated community input. During the summer of 2014, UNNC worked with Council President Wesson to secure $1 million in state funding. We are grateful for his leadership on our behalf.
