In the past 12 months, Southern California has experienced torrential rains, a hurricane with gale-force winds, tornados, mudslides – and there is always the possibility of another major earthquake. Are You Ready?

UNNC has partnered with the Community Disaster Preparedness Foundation’s Neighborhood Team Program (NTP) for six in-person (mini-CERT) sessions that will show us how to be ready and prepared by working together as a team. The February session (last month) included an introduction to NTP and also basic personal emergency preparedness. This coming Wednesday, March 6, we expand to discussing how to prepare your block, your neighborhood, and your neighbors for emergencies.

Our speaker for the evening will be Richard Pope of the Los Angeles Emergency Management Department. He will give you an overview of the RYLAN program which stands for “Ready Your Los Angeles Neighborhood.” This plan is the SECOND LAYER of getting yourselves and your neighbors/neighborhoods disaster-prepared. The first layer is basic personal preparedness. Once you’ve moved from that level, you and your neighbors need to form a basic neighborhood plan. This is where RYLAN comes in.

In unvarnished language, in order to prepare basic neighborhood plan that you and your neighbors can use, it does require that neighbors interact and figure out where your care centers are located, who your neighborhood teams are, and so on.

So please come to this session and you will have Q&A with Richard Pope, one of the City’s top plain language “straight shooters” when it comes to the IMPORTANCE of disaster preparedness for us here in Los Angeles.

Future sessions will include responding to a disaster, basic medical response, two-way radio usage, and other topics that will help us become as ready as possible in time of need. If you attend at least three of the sessions (see calendar below) you will receive a free hand-crank radio.

EVERYONE IS INVITED! We would really appreciate your RSVP (so we can get a head count for refreshments) at
