Deadline: Monday, March 30

Several years ago, the City held a competition to select an artist/artistic team to do a mural project on the city-owned building at 1819 S. Western Avenue, the former Council District 10 field office which was converted into a homelessness services hub. Although an artist was selected at the time, it has taken awhile to bring the project to near-fruition.

The winning design includes murals for three sides of the structure. The concept included a somewhat universal cityscape background of skyscrapers, trees and other buildings. The feedback received at a later community workshop was that the cityscape and trees were too generic and that it would be preferable to replace them with something more specific to our UNNC community.

So, we are gathering some community input on what local landmarks and iconic buildings or sites might appear in the background of the murals. What is your favorite place within UNNC’s boundaries?

(The boundaries are, generally, Pico on the north, Crenshaw on the west, Obama/Exposition on the south; on the east it’s Normandie north of the freeway, Western between the freeway to Jefferson, and then after a turn westward on Jefferson UNNC’s eastern boundary is Arlington to Exposition.)

It could be a house or row of houses; a church; a commercial building; an apartment building – almost anything except NOT a sign of any sort – sorry, but that’s a city rule. And, it should be within the UNNC footprint.

To help you “picture the picture”…we are including a couple of the original concept designs (below) both with and without any buildings in the background. Some of UNNC’s iconic places will replace the existing background cityscape.

Please send your suggestions of specific sites to president@unnc.org – include a description of the building (so we are sure we ID the correct site), its address; and if you are able, a photo.

We have a tight timeline – please submit by Monday, March 30. UNNC’s Governing Board will take a look at the submissions at our April 2nd board meeting, and then forward the submissions to Council District 10 and the artist’s team.
